Awareness is being raised in fishermen about the post harvest fish losses.
Thirty to forty percent of the fish harvest is being destroyed due to the non-adherence to proper methods. Therefore a programme has been launched to raise awareness in the fishermen. Leaving the nets in the sea for long periods before unloading the fish harvests and the non-usage of proper refrigeration techniques have contributed to the loss of fish harvest. The awareness programmes are being conducted by the aquatic Resources Department at the district level. The Fisheries Ministry said that the attendance of the fishermen is at a satisfactory level. Deputy Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources A.D.P.C. Wijayaguanwardena said that the fishermen are being informed about using environmentally friendly systems of fishing.
