Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has said that measures should be taken to transfer the foreign exchange spent on milk powder imports to the local diary farmers.
The Speaker said that by rearing cattle in proper sheds, production of bio gas would be possible. The savings made thus can be used for other purposes. He said that if the overall picture would be focused on instead of one aspect, it would be very beneficial. Millions of rupees are being spent on milk powder imports. He noted that the money that should go into the hands of the farmers is now being sent overseas. He called on the farmers to produce the milk required by the country. The Ministry of livestock is set up to provide the strength needed by the farmers.
The Speaker expressed this view while initiating the construction of Veterinary Centre at Ambalantota. The construction is being carried out with an expenditure of 6.3 million rupees. The aim of the programme is to provide services for diary and livestock farmers in the Ambalantota Divisional Secretariat area. A large number of people’s representatives also participated in the occasion.
