The College of Charleston is preparing to display a collection of more than 2,000 rare outdoor sporting books that date from the 17th century.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Howard and Mary Phipps have donated a collection of books published between the 17th century and early 20th century.
Jenny Fowler with the library says staffers hope to have some of the books ready for display in February during the Southeastern Wildlife Expo in Charleston.
The library's Sharon Bennett says the collection includes about 400 editions of Izaak Walton's "The Compleat Angler," including one edition published in 1655. The book focuses on fishing, recreation and contemplation. Bennett says some think the book made it acceptable to go fishing on Sunday.
