People in their thousands are flocking to Kotmale to view the tunnel of the Upper Kotmale hydropower plant. The tunnel that channels water from the Kotmale stream to the hydropower station is 12.9 kilometres long with a diameter of 5.2 metres.
The Upper Kotmale Hydropower plant is a mega project which has been launched with Japanese assistance. The tunnel was opened by the President on Thursday. Power and Energy Ministry reports said that more than 20 thousand visited the tunnel yesterday, ignoring torrential showers experienced in the area. The entire Talawakele town was congested due to the visitors. The Police had to make an untiring effort to control the crowds. People of all walks of life from every hook and corner of the country are visiting Upper Kotmale to have a view of the tunnel which is considered to be the longest in the country.
As a result of the high response of the public, the Ministry has set aside five more days other than tomorrow for public viewing, that is from the 17th of the 21st of this month.
