The Internal Trade and Cooperatives Ministry is to launch a new credit card for public sector employees.
Deputy Internal Trade and Cooperatives Minister Neomal Perera said the decision was taken as a measure to further ease the cost of living burden from the public sector employees.
He said that salaries of state sector employees covered 25% of the population.
“The government therefore would address this issue and has planned to provide state sector employees with a credit card to purchase goods and services as discounted prices from state enterprises,” he said.
The credit card is to be launched next months and once launched would provide a 7% discount to public servants on purchases of government products.
Perera said that while maintaining prices in the local market, the government would always address the needs of the local consumers.
