Measures are underway to hand over the National Identity cards to their owners at their places of residence.
The Department of Registration of Persons said that the new programme will be initiated from next year. So far the National IDs are being forwarded to the Divisional Secretariats and thereafter to the Grama Niladharis who subsequently handed them over to the owners. The new programme will be launched to avert the delays that may be experienced in handing over the IDs to their owners. The sources from the Department of Registration of Persons said that the applicants should send in a self addressed stamped envelope to receive their National Identity cards.
