Report on the Welikada attack to Courts

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court orders the Police to submit a full inquiry report into the attack on the Police by the Prison inmates at Welikada.

After considering the report submitted by the Borella Police, Additional Magistrate Praharsha Ranasinghe ordered the submission of a report on the investigation on the 30th of this month. The Police report revealed that the inspection of the Magazine Prison in Welikada and the Prison in Colombo was carried out after obtaining a search warrant from the court. The Police intimated to Courts that mobile phones, batteries and 30 miligrams of drugs were seized.

The Police said the CID has already launched a probe into this incident. Furthermore, a committee has been appointed to investigate the incident with the guidance of the Prisons Commissioner’s Department.46 Police officers had been admitted to hospital following yesterday’s attack.

Minister Dew Gunaskara stated that further investigations are in progress. The Minister pointed out that it is the worst criminals who are at Welikada. It is quite evident that drugs cannot be smuggled into prison cells without the knowledge of prison officials. However, he said that it is too early to make a determination until the probe is completed.

In the meantime, expressing views on the condition of the Police officers hospitalised, Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe said that eight police officers were transferred to Police Hospital this morning. He added that the others are receiving at the Hospital.
