The annual Katina Pinkama of the Gangarama temple in Hunupitiya has been held under the patronage of President Rajapaksa.
The Katina Cheevara was brought from the President’s House to the Gangarama temple under the patronage of the President and the First Lady early this morning. The Katina Cheevara was brought in a colourful procession from the President’s House to be offered to the Maha Sangha. The Katina Pinkama held at the end of the 3 month rainy retreat of Buddhist monks is an important event for the Buddhists. The President also offered alms to the Maha Sangha in the morning.
Religious observances were conducted by the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha thera. During his sermon, the Ven. Gnanissara thera said that prosperity is being ushered in under the patronage of the President. He said that all should extend their support to him. A large number of people including members of the Maha Sangha participated in the occasion. The President exchanged views with devotees present.
Meanwhile an all night Pirith Chanting ceremony was held at the Gangarama temple. The religious function was inaugurated under the patronage of Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Yoshith Rajapaksa.
