Media Secretary W.B. Ganegala has said that the Radio and Television Acts will be amended to suit the present needs. He emphasized that a National Transmission Development Authority was planned to be established not to influence media institutions.
Mr. Ganegala said the Government is mulling over the establishment of a National Transmission Development Authority which will have an equal effect on both the Private and State Media. At present all existing media establishments will come under this Authority. The Government has no intention of enforcing laws on the mass media. The Ministry is planning to introduce a Code of Ethics under a series of regulations that is to be enforced for the mass media under this Act.
Mr. Ganegala was speaking at the inauguration of the National Mass media Conference 2010 of the Kelaniya University. Although four decades had passed since the commencement of Mass Media studies within Sri Lanka, a broad based dialogue in this respect had so far not been undertaken. The Mass Media Study Division of the Kelaniya University organized this event to overcome this shortcoming. Lecturers on Mass Media of all Universities countrywide joined on the occasion. The conference draws to an end tomorrow.
