Nurses leave cancelled

Nov 10, 2010 2:32:13 AM - itnnews.lk

Leave for nurses have been cancelled. It is effective immediately.

The Health Ministry said that since the nurses planned a sick note campaign for today, it would harm the innocent patients.

The Health Services Director General Dr. Ajith Mendis has brought this to the notice of all Hospital Directors, Medical Superintendents and Heads of Institutions.

He has intimated to them that leave should only be granted by personally looking into the reasons for which they apply for leave. The Director General has instructed that information on all nurses who do not report for duty today should be provided to the Health Ministry.

He pointed out that it is the onus of the Health Authorities to see that treatment is meted out to the patients sans any interruptions.

The Government has already launched a massive programme to upgrade the nursing service. As such Minister Maithripala Sisisena emphasized that there is no need for the nurses to neglect their duties.

The Minister said that at present he was working on solving disputes related to the Nursing Minutes and other issues. He invited all members of the Nursing Service to broach their problems if they had any to sort them out. The Cabinet is taking all necessary initiatives in this respect.

The nurses should display sympathy towards the patients. He requested the nurses to report for duty and strengthen the service and added that all problems related to their profession can be sorted out through negotiations.
