The Casino Regulatory Bill which is an amended version of the Gaming Bill was passed in Parliament today with 114 in favor and 33 against in the first and second readings.
Opening the debate on the Bill Deputy Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama said the establishment of Casinos and gambling outlets in the environs of schools and places of religious worship is totally prohibited. He said there were requests particularly from the clergy, the VIPs and schools to draft the Bill according to some system. The intention of the Government was to allocate zones or accepted locations as done elsewhere in the world to limit it to these sites based on permits, and taking special note of the tourism industry. Dr. Amunugama added that their main aim was to regulate it, as hitherto no such method prevailed.
