The Government will be hard put to meet its development goals in this post war era if it is to accede to the unreasonable wage hike demanded by the joint opposition in the upcoming budget according to Treasury Secretary Dr P B Jayasundera. The main opposition UNP was demanding a Rs 10,000 pay hike for every public servant while the JVP is asking for a Rs 8,000 increase.
Dr Jayasundera commenting on the above said, “if country wishes to reverse what it achieved over the last five years and get back to double digit inflation and interest rate and unemployment and high cost of living, then one can recommend such increases. No responsible person or party can recommend such policies,” he said. It has been calculated that at the rate of a Rs 100 pay hike for each public servant the Government will incur a massive Rs 1.4 billion to meet the additional cost. The UNP wants to increase this one hundred fold and the JVP eighty times this amount, he pointed out. They are also demanding an increase for pensioners.
