The Badminton teams of Royal and S Thomas’ will take on each other in the fourth annual encounter to be played today from 2 pm onwards at the Royal College Sports Complex. The under 16 team event will commence first followed by the main event for the under 19 teams, which will be played for the "Ranil Wijesekera Challenge Trophy" for the first time. Royal College commenced its Badminton in 1947 with a small band of enthusiasts headed by Chandi Chanmugam, A R L Wijesekera, the Schoorman brothers Sam and Dick, Bala Sivaratnam, K Sri Skandarajah and Ivor Andriesz.
Incidentally, the chief guest at this year’s function hosted by Royal College will be Dr A R L Wijesekera, who captained the Royal teams in 1948 and 49, coached the school and national teams and has become a father figure for generations of badminton players at Royal and National teams.
Badminton has emerged as one of the most popular and keenly contested sports amongst schools and along with the rich history behind this sport in both institutions, these two schools have continued to maintain its high standards throughout the years.
