A black Union sailor from South Carolina is finally getting a veterans marker on his grave this Veterans Day.
The marker for Henry Benjamin Noisette is being unveiled Thursday at a Charleston cemetery. Reenactors, Citadel cadets and descendants of Noisette plan to attend the ceremony.
Noisette escaped slavery and joined the U.S. Navy in 1862 after federal forces captured Port Royal near Beaufort.
The Charleston native fought on the USS Huron and saw action against Confederate defenses on the Stono River near Charleston and the Ogeechee River south of Savannah, Ga.
Later off Charleston, the Huron snagged a Confederate blockade runner.
