Minister Wimal Weerawansa has said the programme to clear and widen the canals the drainage system in Colombo will be expedited. The Minister said that the programme has been launched as a measure to control the flood situation.
He said that the main cause of the floods is envisaged as the large volume of water that fell in a short period of time. He said that this is considered as the highest rainfall received in the current history. The other main cause is the blockage of the drainage system in the urban areas. He said that the canals have not been completely repaired. He noted that the flood situation was controlled to an extent due to certain measures taken by the Low-lying Areas Reclamation and Development Board. He noted that certain changes have to be effected in the development activities of those. If this task will be completed he said such a situation can be averted.
