A programme to clear stagnated water

A programme has been launched to clear the stagnated water in low-lying urban areas. Minister A.H.M. Fowzie said that urgent measures were being taken to widen and clear the drainage system.

He said his Ministry has granted 10 million rupees for the Colombo District and five million rupees each for Gampaha and Kalutara Districts to provide food for the displaced. The Ministry has the strength to provide more funds. The Minister stated that they have taken measures to protect lives of the people who are affected by the floods and work for their satisfaction. He said that further relief will be provided when they return to their homes.

Meanwhile, funds have been allocated to provide maximum relief to the people affected by floods. It is believed that all flood affected people will be able to return to their homes today. The Minister said that the drains and culverts have been cleared and canals were dredged to facilitate the flow of water. The Minister stressed that they will continue to carry out the work as it might rain again after one month. He said that the Government is attempting to protect people during floods.
