The 25th annual conference of the World Buddhist Congress has got underway.
The 25th annual conference of the World Buddhist Congress was inaugurated under the patronage of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne in Colombo. The All Ceylon Buddhist Congress has organized the conference. Buddhist monks and lay members belonging to 154 organizations in 41 countries are participating in the conference. A stamp and a first day cover were issued to mark the occasion. Expressing his views Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that it is a landmark event and an occasion to be proud of. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the World Buddhist Congress will be able to play a pioneering role in achieving world peace and coexistence. President of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Congress Jagath Sumathipala and Senior Vice President of the World Buddhist Congress Dr. Ananda Guruge were among those who participated in the occasion. Meanwhile the 60th anniversary function of the World Buddhist Congress will be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Tuesday under the patronage of the President. The meeting of Buddhist Business leaders will be held tomorrow under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa tomorrow
