JVP parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti and three others were assaulted yesterday (14) evening in the Jaffna town.
Handunnetti had arrived in Jaffna yesterday evening to participate in the protest campaign organized for today (15) in Jaffna calling on the government to safeguard the rights of the Tamil detainees and to reveal their names and details.
A massive banner is to be signed by politicians and civilians at today’s protest scheduled to be held opposite the Jaffna bus stand at 1 p.m.
At the time of the attack Handunnetti and several other JVP members have been attending a discussion with former TNA MP Padmini Sithambaranadan and her husband in their residence in the Jaffna Town.
A group of persons have come and attempted to abduct a JVP activist and during the struggle that ensued, Handunnetti and several others have been injured.
The JVP Media Unit states that a complaint about the incident has already been lodged in the Jaffna Police.
