A massive tree-planting campaign was kicked off today to coincide with President Rajapaksa’s second term swearing-in ceremony.
The aim of the programme is said to be to plant 1.1 million trees islandwide. President Rajapaksa and his wife launched the campaign by planting saplings at the President’s house.
Police, Army and Navy personnel, and some Government Ministers also planted young trees in support of the campaign. It has been reported that the trees planted far exceed the target of 1.1 million saplings, closer to 3.5 million.
This week has been declared a week of celebration in view of President Rajapaksa’s second term swearing in, which will take place on Friday (19).
Photos show participants planting young trees in Karadiyana, Piliyandala, an area which has been adversely affected by unauthorised garbage disposal.
