A woman whose van is alleged to have precipitated the traffic crash that killed a Columbia-Richland firefighter Saturday had a Mexican drivers license and no other license, S.C. Highway Patrol officials said Monday.
"We are looking to see if she is here illegally," said patrol Col. Kenny Lancaster.
The woman, Neida Ortegta, has been charged with driving without a license and driving too fast for conditions, Lancaster said.
If Ortega is shown to have been in this country illegally, she will be turned over to federal immigration authorities, Lancaster said.
An initial patrol investigation showed that the van Ortega was driving rear-ended a Chevy Impala on the eastbound lane of Interstate 20 near Clemson Road on Saturday afternoon.
