The Local Authorities Special Provisions and the Local Government (Amendment) Bills are in accordance with the constitution. The Supreme Court has decided that they do not violate the constitution. Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa intimated the decision to Parliament today.
The Speaker made the announcements when Parliament commenced sittings this morning. He said that the Supreme Court has informed him that none of the sections violate the constitution. The Bills were recently tabled in Parliament. Thereafter eight cases had been filed in courts against the Bills. The Supreme Court’s decision will pave the way for the conduct of the debate and and secure approval. The Parliament proceedings are being continued.
