President Rajapaksa commissioned the first stage of the Magampura Port with the arrival of a vessel ‘Jetliner’ followed by a sailing ship and a cargo ship.
Magampura harbour has a pride of place amongst the massive development projects launched to make the country the marvel of Asia. The first ship arrived in the Magampura harbour at the auspicious time, marking a historic moment. Chief Incumbent of Kirivehera the Ven. Aluthwewa Soratha thera administered Pansil while other religious observances were also conducted. The invitation was thereafter extended for the first ship to enter into the harbour. The Jetliner ship of the Navy arrived in the harbour following the invitation extended by the President amidst the chanting of Pririth by the Maha Sangha. First Lady Shirnthi Rajapaksa, a number of Parliamentarians and Ministers participated in the historic occasion. The Jetliner ship entered the harbour amidst the applause of the people who had gathered.
A ship built on the model of a sailing vessel and a commercial ship arrived at the harbour following the Jetliner vessel symbolizing the ancient Silk Route.
The construction of an International harbour in Hambantota was a dream to the masses. The President initiated the massive development project on 15th January 2008 paving the way for the realization of the dream of the people. The harbour was built at the expenditure of 50 billion rupees. In the first phase docking facilities are provided for five ships while it is as five times as big as the Colombo Harbour.
