Today is the 65th birthday of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the fifth Executive President of Sri Lanka and an outstanding and distinguished Leader who ushered in freedom for the nation.
Mahinda Rajapaksa is the second son in a family of six brothers and three sisters and was born in Weeraketiya on November 18th 1945. He succeeded his father- veteran politician DA Rajapaksa to Sri Lanka’s Parliament in the 1970 polls, showing strong support his family has had for decades from the poor and voiceless peoples in Sri Lanka’s southern Hambantota District- now emerging into a global mega port city. He was first elected to the Parliament in 1970 in the United Freedom Front Government and became the youngest-ever MP to enter the Sri Lanka’s Parliament at the age of 24. Honesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Fearlessness and not indulging in petty partisan community politics were the greatest qualities that were the force in him that drove him to the zenith of his political carrier. From the beginning of his career, he adopted a centre-left political stance, identifying himself with labour rights and becoming a champion of human rights. He was a key spokesman of Parliamentarians for Human Rights. The services discharged by him for the country are priceless Children’s Court are the brainchild of President Rajapaksa, mooted mainly to mete out justice to the people.
On 18th November 2005 he assumed duties as the Executive President of the country as a senior leader with more than four decades of experience. During his first term of office he achieved many victories for the country. He has entered history as the leader who unified the country after eliminating the LTTE terrorism that prevailed for nearly 30 years. The Programme of the President who has pledged to steer the country to become the marvel of Asia has set an example to the entire world. He is playing a significant role with regard to the future by launching massive projects of highways, harbours, power plants and irrigation. Tomorrow he is due to take oaths for his second term. Various religious functions are being held throughout the country to invoke blessings on the President on the occasion of his assumption office and birthday.
