Colombo Archbishop’s consecration tomorrow

Nov 19, 2010 10:20:37 AM - itnnews.lk

Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith will be consecrated by His Holiness the Pope Benedict as a Cardinal of the Catholic Church tomorrow.

The induction will take place in the Vatican. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith will be the only Asian among 24 others who would be elevated to the high office of the Catholic Church by the Pontiff. Before this ceremony, the Pope is set to host a rare meeting of more than 100 Cardinals from around the world for policy discussions. The Cardinals are rarely summoned to the Vatican.

Representatives of the Catholic Church and Government and opposition politicians will receive the Cardinal on his arrival at the Katunayake International Airport. His first act would be to visit the Tewatte Basilica to offer prayers to Sri Lanka’s first Cardinal, the Late Dr. Thomas Cardinal Cooray. A thanksgiving mass is also scheduled at St. Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena.
