Religious ceremonies mark Il Full Moon Day

Nov 21, 2010 11:08:09 AM - itnnews.lk

Today is Il Full Moon Poya Day. Religious ceremonies are organized throughout the country to mark the event.

Several important had taken place on this religious day. It was on the Il Full Moon Poya Day, after having spent the first rainy season since his Enlightenment at the Deer Park of Isipathana that the Buddha addressed his disciples, who at the time numbered 60. He told them to preach the Dhamma excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle and excellent in the end, both in the spirit and the letter. He dispatched those Arahants in various directions before he himself set forth on his way to Uruwela in Senanigama in order to preach the Dhamma. The announcement of the future Buddhahood of Maithri Bodhisatva and the acceptance of a robe from the future Buddha-to-be Mathri, all took place on the Il Full Moon Poya Day.

The 80th in the series of the “Amaa-dam Sisilasa” Dhamma sermons at Temple Trees was conducted by the Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma thera. President Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and a large gathering were present.

The “Savanak Res” programme telecast on every Poya Day by ITN was brought from the Jethawanarama temple.
