The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has said that electricity tariffs would be increased from January next year.
Head of the Commission Damitha Kumarasinghe has told the media that the tariff would be increased to offset the withdrawal of the subsidy provided by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
The Commission is to announce the proposed new rates on November 29 for the public to make their comments.
Kumarasinghe has been quoted in the media as saying that the Commission was looking at charging extra rates from householders using more than 300 units a month.
However, the final decision on the rates are to be made after hearing the public comments. The public is to be given two weeks to give their views and the Commission has said it hoped to have a public hearing at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on December 15 before finalizing the new rates.
