The debate on the budget that was presented by President Rajapaksa commenced in Parliament today .
The debate will continue for six days. Thereafter the vote will take place. It will be followed by Committee Stage Discussions on the Votes of Ministries. Parliament sources said the debate on the Committee stage will be held for 10 days. Political Analysts say that the Government will not find any difficulty in passing the budget as it enjoys a two thids in Parliament.
The budget presented by the President yesterday has provided relief to all citizens. A five percent salary increase has been given for public servants while the cost of living allowance has also been increased. The Government expects to provide employment to 10,000 graduates within next year. The pensions have also been increased. Meanwhile taxes have been removed in many sectors. The budget has also focused on media personnel. It contained proposals to upgrade the Universities in the country to the international level. The relief provided to the farmers and workers was another notable feature.
