Floods wreak havoc in several parts of the country

Many people are impacted by torrential rains experienced in several areas. Transport is also affected.

4885 families are displaced by floods in the Kurunegala District alone. 104 houses have been devastated while 185 houses are partially damaged. One death is reported from the Panduwasnuwara area. The highest number displaced is from Panduwasnuwara. The figure is 819 families. Floods are reported from the Bingiriya, Wariyapola, Maho and Ella areas. The Disaster Management Ministry had alrleay taken action to release 800 thousand rupees to the Kurunegala Divisional Secretary to provide relief to the displaced. The displaced are being provided with food and dry rations.

In the meantime, 2345 families of four Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Puttalam District are affected due to the overflow of Deduru Oya and Kadupiti Oya. The Puttalam District Disaster Management Unit said transport from Madampe to Dankotuwa is also affected due to the overflow of Kadupiti Oya and Hamiltion Oya. Our correspondent said that certain places of the road are under three feet of water. Several byroads in the area are also flooded. The Disaster Management Unit pointed out that two houses within the Pallama Divisioanl Secretariat Division are destroyed. 16 houses are partially damaged. 1663 families of 11 Grama Niladhari Divisions within the Chilaw Divisional Secretariat Division are affected by floods.
