The government is looking at recovering the high cost incurred in thermal power generation from the high energy consumers through the proposed tariff revision.
Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka has told parliament that instead of resorting to short term solutions, the country’s electricity prices needed to be stabilized.
He said the government would introduce an electricity billing formula that would promote renewable energy sources among consumers.
According to the Minister, the Power and Energy Ministry is to introduce a programme to create awareness among consumers on utilizing less electricity while enjoying the same comfort level.<p>
President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the 2011 budget proposals stated that electricity prices would be increased by 8% from January next year.
