Minister S.B. Dissanayake has said that Sri Lanka had the capability of standing up with courage ahead of all countries in Asia. He said what the people should do was to take the necessary initiative to support the President in steering the country forward.
Participating the debate on the Second Reading of the Budget in Parliament, the Minister opined that the allocation made by the budget for Universities and Higher Educational Institutions was three billion rupees. The World Bank and many countries including India have given assistance. The expenditure that is hoped to be incurred in upgrading the Universities to international level is 600 million rupees. He pointed out that the aim of all these efforts was to mould a Universal child. A 25 percent salary increase has been proposed in the budget for University lecturers as a solution to the vacancies existing in this sector.
Plans are afoot to award Presidential Awards for University Research. Minister Dissanayake further told the house during the budget debate that the final aim of all these efforts was to nurture the posterity with educational, technological and universal knowledge.
