It has been estimated that the Colombo Municipal Council incurs an expenditure of 2.1 million rupees on garbage disposal per day.
Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranaike made this reference in response to a query raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake in Parliament today. Nearly 7000 metric tons of garbage is being disposed of per day around Colombo Municipal authority areas. Three Companies have already taken over the disposal task. He opined that garbage removal is being carried out three times per day. A Special Commissioner has been assigned to the Colombo Municipal Council and the allegations and information related to the Colombo Municipality have been submitted to the Chief Minister. He pointed out that elections to the Municipality are scheduled to be held in parallel to the Provincial Council polls.
