South Carolina lawmakers plan to consider more legislation to crack down on illegal immigrants in the state.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Pickens Sen. Larry Martin says South Carolina spends a lot of money on illegal immigrants. Officials say the state pays unknown amounts to house illegal immigrants in jail, process them in the judicial system and provide social services and school for their children.
Charleston Sen. Robert Ford says the state should leave the matter to the federal government. He says immigration is a matter of human welfare.
Charleston Sen. Glenn McConnell says passing a law like Arizona's will be a top priority for lawmakers next year. The Arizona law allows police to check the immigration status if an officer thinks a person is in the country illegally.
