The Government is mulling over the import of sugar directly from Brazil, granting relief to the consumers.
Minister Johnston Fernando had discussions in this respect with the Brazilian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Henrique Lopez. 90 percent of sugar to meet the country’s sugar requirements is imported from Brazil. The Minister pointed out that with the import of sugar via direct mediation of his Ministry, it would be possible to supply sugar to consumers without experiencing any shortage. A major part of the sugar is imported from Brazil.
The Ministry decided to directly mediate and import sugar after discussions with the Brazilian Government and the Private Sector. This will help save the profits that are being distributed among the middlemen and passing it on the consumers. The Minister opined that it would help them to provide sugar to consumers at a reduced rate.
