Two schools in Maskeliya and Gampola have been temporarily closed down due to a sudden outbreak of a disease.
The Stockholm Barathi Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Norwood and the Westhall Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Gampola have been closed temporarily. The Stockholm Barathi Tamil Maha Vidyalaya has been closed for thee days until Monday owing to the rapidly spreading viral fever. Around 40 students were hospitalized over the past two days after they suddenly fell ill. Six students are still receiving treatment at the Dickoya District Hospital. Medical Officer of Health Sanjaya Kulatilake said that a viral flue was fast spreading in the area.
In the meantime 75 students of the Westhall Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, who suddenly fell ill, have been admitted to the Nawalapitiya Hospital, They had fainted due to inhaling contaminated air. It is believed that these students had fainted after agrochemicals had been sprayed at a tea plantation next to the school. Accordingly the Westhall School has also been closed indefinitely.
