Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith who returned to the island after being elevated to the position of Cardinal officiates in the first mass.
The Cardinal arrived in Sri Lanka this morning after being anointed as a Cardinal by Pope Benedict the 16th at the Vatican.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne welcomed the Cardinal on behalf of the Government. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunaga was among the dignitaries present at the airport.
Members of the Maha Sangha chanted Pirith at the Katunayake International Airport to shower blessings on the new Cardinal who brought fame to Sri Lanka. Thereafter he was conducted in a motorcade to the Basilica Church at Tewatte in Ragama. School children and public who gathered along the motorcade waved flags to extend their greetings. The Catholic clergy and the devotees participated in a service to extend their blessings to him.
After honoring the late Thomas Cardinal Cooray, the first Cardinal of Sri Lanka Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith officiated in the mass.
