The Pakistani President has told his Sri Lankan counterpart that Sri Lanka’s experiences are important in defeating regional terrorism.
The meeting between President Rajapaksa and his Pakistani opposite Asif Ali Zardari took place at the at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. Their meeting lasted nearly one hour. After the meeting, representatives of both countries joined in a discussion. The Pakistani Leader conveyed his sympathies to the Sri Lankan Leader with regard to the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan cricketers in Pakistan.
President Zardari highly acclaimed the dedication made by the Sri Lankan Government including the President to liberate the Sri Lankans from terrorism. Both Leaders adverted to the fact of further consolidating trade relations between the two countries. They broached the export of Sri Lankan tea and gems to Pakistan.
President Zardari commended the progress achieved in Sri Lanka’s health sector. He was willing to secure the services of Sri Lankan Nurses as trainee advisors. The Pakistani President requested the support of Sri Lanka English and Mathematics teachers. Appreciating the “Mathata Thitha programme”, he pointed out the need for the launching of a joint programme to eliminate the drugs menace totally from the region.
President Rajapaksa, requesting the direction of Pakistani investors to exploit the investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, assured he could provide all necessary infrastructure for the investors. Both Leaders drew their attention to promoting banking activities within the two countries.
Meanwhile four agreements were inked after the meeting between the Pakistani and Sri Lankan Presidents. These related to visa abolition for holders of Diplomatic and official passports and MOU on Agricultural Cooperation, Cooperation and Mutual Distractive Assistance in Customs matters and Cooperation in the field of Arts and Creative Studies.
