The second reading of the 2011 budget was passed in Parliament, with a majority of 104 votes.
The debate on the budget presented by the President in Parliament lasted several days. The vote on the Second Reading was taken at 6.00 p.m. today. All parties affiliated 150 votes were cast in favour and 46 against. All Government parties voted in favour of the budget.
The Opposition lead by the United National Party voted against the budget. The Tamil National Alliance abstained from voting. Committee Stage discussions in which Votes of Ministries will be debated, will begin tomorrow. Thereafter the vote on the Third Reading is scheduled for the 10th of next month.
