Over 5kg of gold worth around 27 million rupees and foreign currency have been seized by custom officials.
A foreigner and two local airport staff have also been arrested for attempting to smuggle the items on a flight to Dubai this morning. They had intended to smuggle the large quantity of gold and the foreign currency on board the 1.40am flight to Dubai today.
Customs Director Parakrama Basnayake explained the foreigner had been arrested while he had boarded the flight. The two airport staff had been arrested while they had been transporting the gold and cash in secret to a passenger on the plane. The gold which exceeds 5kg has been estimated to be worth around Rs. 27 million. Airport Custom officials revealed that the value of the stack of foreign currency amounted to 30 million rupees
