The Government has spent 1590 million rupees on uniforms for around four million school children. It was possible to save 89 million rupees due to purchases made from local manufacturers.
11.1 million metres will be distributed among the children for next year. It includes monk students numbering 45 thousand and 250 thousand Muslim students who would receive fardas. The release of uniforms to schools commenced under the patronage of Minister Bandula Gunawardene and Education Secretary H.M. Gunasekara. A notable feature is supply of all requirements by local manufacturers. It is planned to complete the distribution of uniforms before the year-end vacation begins. Giving his views on the occasion, the Minister said that a colossal sum had been spent this year too for knowledge-centre development.
