The Trade Minister adopts action to control the price of rice. He accused the UNP of initiating action to increase the price. The Minister to released rice stocks to Lak Sathosa outlets to control the price during the festive season.
The Minister said the price of rice is very low. There is a price difference of 10 rupees when compared with private traders. He said the wholesale price of a kilo of Samba is 59 rupees, Nadu 54, red raw rice 42 and white rice 49. The Trade Ministry has taken this decision. He revealed that after talks with Lak Sathosa it has been decided to sell a kilo of Samba at 63.50, Nadu at 58.50, Red raw rice at 45.50 and white at 53.50. They hoped to release their stocks to the market to prevent an artificial price hike. He emphatically stated that the price of rice had not increased at all.
The new programme initiated by the Minister will help consumers to purchase rice at treasonable prices. 30 million metric tons of rice at the Sathosa main storage facility are being distributed.
