Traders warned not to increase prices

Minister Johnston Fernando bas reiterated that he will not permit traders to increase prices of goods during the festive season according to their needs. He assures that action will be taken to import big onions if its price was not reduced.

The Minister said he hopes to reduce the price of the big onions to between 115 and 120 rupees within the next few days. He has initiated orders in this respect. He emphasized that no one can increase the price of the essential commodities specially during the festive season.

The actual price of the big onion should be within 90 to 95 rupees. But the price has been deliberately increased up to 180 to 190 rupees from yesterday. He demanded the relevant authorities to reduce the price with immediate effect.

It not he assured that he will undertake imports from India and China within next few days. As such, the Minister requested them to reduce the price. He added that if they do not heed the order the Government will be compelled to interfere to effect a reduction in the price of onions to between115 and 120 rupees.
