Dec 2, 2010 3:13:10 AM - itnnews.lk

The President’s address to the Oxford Union has been cancelled. It follows a request made by the Oxford Student’s Union following security reasons.

The address scheduled to be delivered by the President at the Oxford Student’s Union today was cancelled due to security reasons. President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratuanga in a statement described it as a unilateral decision taken by the Union following influences made by LTTE activists.

Pointing out that he was concerned over the cancellation of his address, President Rajapaksa said he would make continuous attempt to find a suitable place whether in Great Britain or any other place to speak about his future vision on Sri Lanka. He emphasized he would continue in his endeavour to unite all people of his country whether they are in Sri Lanka or outside. As a united country, they had a bright future. Sri Lanka had a 30 year history filled with disputes and divisions. The President further said it is time to consolidate peace and unity in Sri Lanka.

The President is in the London with a high level deputation comprising politicians and the business community. The delegation is due to meet British Parliamentarians, business leaders and Sri Lankans domiciled in Britain.
