India’s Union Cabinet has approved a proposal for a passenger ferry service between India and Sri Lanka to revive the old linkages that existed between the two countries.
This has been reported in The Hindu newspaper. Indian Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan said that a Memorandum of Understanding is to be signed between New Delhi and Colombo soon to provide a joint mechanism for passenger transportation between the two countries. India recently completed negotiations on the MoU for resuming ferry services, both from Colombo to Tuticorin and Talaimannar to Rameswaram. Initially, the ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo will be started and the Talaimannar to Rameswaram service will be added later. The old pier at Talaimannar will be rebuilt with the Indian assistance.
