Three arrested in flea market sting

Dec 2, 2010 5:15:00 PM - thestate.com
Three men have been arrested for selling counterfeit movies, CDs and designer clothing at a West Columbia flea market.

James Ben Woodring of Wellford and Billy Joe Woodring of Spartanburg have been charged with illegal distribution of recordings, according to Secretary of State Mark Hammond's office. Each faces a maximum $250,000 fine and five years in prison.

Hassan Y. Elzein of Cayce was charged with illegal distribution of counterfeit goods, and he faces a maximum $20,000 fine and up to five years in prison, the secretary of state reported. Products seized from Elzein included coats, purses, hats, shoes and clothes with labels such as Air Jordan, Chanel, Ed Hardy and The North Face.

Elzein and James Woodring previously have received warnings from law enforcement for selling counterfeit items at flea markets, Hammond's office said.

The three men were arrested after a Wednesday sting at the Metro Flea Market on U.S. 1 in West Columbia, the secretary of state said. Police had received complaints from customers and from other vendors who sell legitimate goods.
