Tamil Diaspora should help Sri Lanka – Tamil leaders

Dec 4, 2010 11:31:25 AM - itnnews.lk

Tamil Political party representatives point out that the need of the hour is for the Tamil Diaspora to help their colleagues in Sri Lanka. If not they claim that the President who is dedicated to the progress for the Tamil community will face embarrassment. Parliamentarians Prabha Ganeshan and P. Digambaram representing Tamil political parties addressed a news conference today.

Parliamentarian Prabha Ganeshan said he was requesting their Diaspora that Tamils living in Sri Lanka will be encountering enormous difficulties due to their initiatives. Staging demonstrations in Britain may look like a joke for them. But it would become a serious problem to the Tamils living not only in the North and East but also in the South. If the Diaspora needed to support the Tamils, they should visit the North and South, and rebuild the schools ravaged during the war as well as the roads. They could also make investments in Sri Lanka. Mr. Ganeshan said if so, it would lead to the betterment of the lives of the Tamil community. Staging demonstrations will hurt relations between the Tamil and Sinhala communities which are now living in harmony. He pointed out that it is only through the mediation of the President that they could resolve their problems. He commented that not only they, but also the Tamil National Alliance has accepted this fact.

Parliamentarian P. Digambaram said only two percent of Sri Lankan Tamils are living in other countries. Staging demonstrations abroad against the Government will deprive the Tamils of what they are getting. They are sorry about it. He emphasized that their stand is that the problems of the Tamil community should be solved through discussions. He urged the Tamil Diaspora to stop staging protests against the Government.
