Though we don’t like the British today, it’s they who developed C olombo, with the Port and R.A. de Mel Mawatha as a relief road to Galle, being lasting monuments to their name, an official said.
This was said by President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s younger brother, Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at a function in Colombo on Thursday. His statement comes in the backdrop of the Oxford Union cancelling a scheduled speech to have had been delivered by Rajapaksa (Senior) also on Thursday,
ostensibly for security reasons.
The cancellation took place after Rajapaksa travelled all the way to the UK last week to deliver the lecture, which ultimately turned out to be a “not to be” event.
Whitehall has been displeased with the Rajapaksa Government’s war against terrorism, especially during its final days, for alleged human rights abuse, and has called for an independent inquiry of the same, which the Government has refused to do.
UK is Sri Lanka’s second largest export and inbound tourism market.
The UK High Commission in Colombo has denied allegations that Whitehall was involved in the cancellation.
