A 75-year-old Hopkins area man died over the weekend in an apparent hunting accident in lower Richland County.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, went hunting Sunday afternoon about 1 p.m. in the Hopkins area and didnt return to his house later, S.C. Department of Natural Resources spokesman Robert McCullough said Monday.
Shortly after nightfall, family and friends went looking for the man and found his body by his truck on a Garrick Road, a narrow dirt road off old Bluff Road near Congaree National Park.
McCullough said a preliminary investigation indicates the man was alone when his weapon -- a 30.06 rifle -- fired accidentally shortly after 6 p.m.
"It appears he went to put his rifle in his truck and it discharged," McCullough said.
