Sri Lankans have entered a significant era

Dec 8, 2010 9:51:14 AM - itnnews.lk

The former Editor of the Observer newspaper and former General Secretary of the South Asia Mass Media Association H.L.D. Mahindapala claims that Sri Lankans have entered a significant era which they had not dreamt of. Joining in a special interview with the Lankadipa newspaper, he pointed out that if anyone needs to recall such an era, they will have to turn over pages of the history where the Dutugemunu and Parakrama Bahu eras are mentioned.

Mr. Mahindapala referred to the special features of the victory achieved in the present era than the Dutugemunu and Parakrama Bahu periods. Kings and administrators of the past had not experienced threats confronted by President Rajapaksa. There were no international influences during the Dutugemunu era. It was also the same with other Kings. Foreign economic influences also did not prevail during those periods. A background of Sri Lankans living abroad and operating against the island was not witnessed.

Mr. Mahindapala pointed out that opposition parties in the past did not continuously attack the Government. What the terrorist leader Prabhakaran did was to devastate the :Tamil polity. He also destroyed the Tamil leadership. There was a 33 year old war. The battle which erupted with the adoption of the Vaddukodai proposal on 14th May 1976 drew to an end from the Nanthikadal lagoon on 18th May 2009. Mr. Mahindapala made a fervent appeal not to look at the present era through an incorrect angle. He underscored that the freedom gained by Sri Lankans was a historic wealth. Only the Sri Lankan national flag among the 192 national flags hoisted opposite the UN Headquarters have given a proper place to the Tamil civilians. It is clear that all Tamils enjoy their rightful place at present. They also have received the required facilities including higher education and jobs. Jobs have been provided in the State as well as private sectors. Even when taking into consideration the language, they are not suffering injustices.

Mr. Mahindapala in the interview emphatically stated that it was President Mahinda Rajapaksa who had given freedom to the people ending a dire pathetic situation.
