Thai police arrested 50 illegal Sri Lankan immigrants in Bangkok early this morning. The External affairs Ministry has requested details from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Bangkok information about the arrested illegal migrants.
Thai media reports said suspected members of Sri Lanka’s vanquished terrorist group the LTTE were believed to be among them. The Police said they had been living in rented rooms on the Soi Phermsin off Phahol Yothin Road in Bang Khen District. The immigrants have been sent to the Immigration Bureau for further questioning. A Globe and Mail report in August said the Tamils arrive in Bangkok from Sri Lanka on two-week tourist visas and stay in rented apartments pretending to be tourists until a ship is ready to take them to Canada. In October this year Thai immigration officials with the aid of the Crime Suppression Division of Thai police raided several apartments in Bangkok city and arrested 155 illegal Sri Lankan immigrants.
