A Norfolk Southern train killed a man crossing a trestle bridge near I-20 and Monticello Road, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts today.
The victim, David Padley, was struck by the train about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday while coming back from Columbia International University, where he and a friend had been buying books, Watts said.
Padley was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. at Palmetto Richland.
Padley, who was in town from France visiting his son for the holidays, was with a friend when he was crossing the bridge, Watts said.
The two were using the bridge as a shortcut, Watts said.
